Class to Pass in 3 Weeks

The theoretical test

The theory test is a pen and paper exercise and is currently offered at 38 driving test centres throughout the country.  They are listed in the DSA Fleet Starter Pack which also contains the application form and question bank.  When ready you should apply to the Fleet Driver Training Section, DSA, Nottingham, who will arrange a test appointment for you.  This method will be employed until an IT based touch screen test is introduced.  Furthermore, there are no plans to introduce a computerised hazard perception element at this present time.

Multiple Choice:

Before the test starts you will be given instructions on how the test works.  The test will consist of 100 questions with a choice of four answers per question.  You are allowed 90 minutes to complete the test.

The questions are on the following topic areas and grouped into four bands:-

  • Band 1 – driving practice and procedures; road and traffic signs; motorway driving.

  • Band 2 – driver attitude; driver and the law; environmental issues.

  • Band 3 – vehicle dynamics and handling; accident procedures.

  • Band 4 – instructional coaching techniques; hazard perception.

The question bank for the theory test and recommended reading list are contained within the starter pack.  They will also be useful when studying for the second and third parts of the qualifying exam.

You may already have sat and passed the theory test on your own initiative and if so, please accept our congratulations.  If not, we at ‘The Driving Training Centre’ would be delighted to help you with your studies.

Pass Mark:

The overall pass mark for the multiple choice test is 85%.  However, you must achieve a minimum mark of 80% in each of the four main topic areas (Bands 1, 2, 3 and 4).  It is therefore possible for you to get an overall mark of 85% or higher but still fail the test because you have not gained the minimum of 80% in any one or more of the four bands.

After the Test:

You will be notified in writing of your result and will also be given information on how to continue with the qualification process i.e. how to apply for the test of driving ability if successful, or how to apply to re-take the theory test if unsuccessful.

Preparation for the Test:

Some people find difficulty in preparing for a written theoretical test and this is where we at ‘The Driving Training Centre’ can use our expertise to help you organise your studies.  We employ the services of highly skilled and qualified trainers who have worked in the education field for many years.  They will guide you through the test syllabus and ensure that you are fully briefed and ready to take the test.  If appropriate, this may include one to one tuition.  A mock test can also be arranged, and this will be held under strict exam conditions in order to create as realistic an environment as possible.  Following the test, we will conduct a review of your question paper and provide you with relevant feedback.

The Next Step:

Once you have passed the Part One Theoretical Test it is time to move onto the next stage –  Part Two, the Test of Driving Ability.  Irrespective of how good at driving  each of us consider ourselves to be, we can all benefit from additional or refresher training in order to enhance our skills even further.   At ‘The Driving Training Centre’ we will provide you with those advanced driver skills so that you comfortably meet the criterion to pass the test.  By the time you have finished this stage of the programme you will have taken a major step towards achieving the DSA Fleet Driver Training Qualification.
