Preparing To Learn
Before you can learn to drive a car on public roads you need to:
- Be 17 years old (minimum - people of ANY age can learn to drive!)
- Have a provisional driving licence. You can apply up to three months before your 17th birthday. You can pick up the forms in the Post Office, or we can do it all for you here. Come in and ask us about this service. You can book lessons before you get this licence but you need to have it before you can take any practical lessons. Before you can drive a car unaccompanied on public roads you need to:
- Pass your theory test. We specialise in training our students to pass this test. You need to do this before you can book your practical test.
- Have driving lessons. Professional instruction is recommended and, at a later date, extra practice with a patient friend/relative who is at least 21 years old AND has held a full UK driving licence for at least three years. The car must also display red ‘L’ plates to the front and rear while the learner is driving. Please also check you are insured to drive that car. DTC cars are all insured for you to drive with no extra cost to you.
- Pass the practical test! This is the last stage in the process.
